October 2020helloWith so much going on in 2020 — the chaotic presidential debates, the death of the Notorious RBG and the power-grab that followed, and the US passing 350,000 deaths from coronavirus — it was hard not to feel overwhelmed. This idea is captured in the collage of newspaper clippings I gessoed over to make up the background of the work.
helloAfter WWI, red poppies became a symbol of hope for a peaceful future. I wanted to incorporate these poppies into my painting to symbolize the hope I was holding onto in these uncertain times. Rather than red, I decided to paint Golden Poppies, which are the state flower of California, my home.
helloThe quote that comes out of the typewriter embodies an idea that has kept me going and inspires me to continue making art: “In a world that seeks to destroy, the most powerful thing you can do is create” (Anonymous).
